Thinking about buying a 72 mercury rocket 340 cc
the guy said all it needs is points
are they hard to change?

Real easy if you know anything about magnetos and stators. You will need a steering wheel puller with studs to pull the flywheel and the rest is a piece of cake. Remember to clean the points before you re-install the flywheel. I always used Laquer Thinner and a business card. Seems to work just fine. I would just change the stator plate on my old yamies when I lost fire in one hole. It was worth it to have a few laying around.

Have'nt changed the points on my son's GP292 yet, although I have on my old DT trail bikes, ...pull the flywheel, change the points and condenser, replace the flywheel and adjust the point opening,...when all is said and done, wedge a nail file between the closed points and lightly scuff the contacts (there's a coating on the points from the factory). ;)!

Points were always a problem on the 68,69 and 70's sleds we had. After a while you get good at it. It is not that hard at all.
